Passion, the thing we are looking for but few of us ever find. The older we get the busier we become and the thing we had so much of when we were younger starts to fade. But lately it seems like everyone has been on a mission to rediscover it. This is my take on passion.
I’m like you watching right now thinking about what I want the next chapter of my life to look like.
I’ve recently, over the past 2 years begun to day dream like I used to when I was in school.
Then it hit me.
I’m back in school.
I’m an adult now but I spend a large amount of my day inside an office under fluorescent light.
It might as well be a classroom with me sitting in a plastic chair that’s attached to a 3×2 piece of artificial wood.
Sure I’m no longer wearing god knows what i was thinking and I traded whatever that was for a suit, fancy shoes, and a steady paycheck.
But I’m basically an adult kid.
Who has rules that are designed for me to follow and prevent me from drawing outside the lines.
If I break a rule no matter how stupid it is no matter how much common sense it lacks the result is displinary action or a coaching session.
But I was such a good adult kid that I barely ever had to deal with that.
Instead early in my career before I saw clearly, I would work no matter the hour to get the job done.
What’s worse is I was the one handing out the disciplinary actions and the one on one coaching sessions to anyone who drew outside of those lines and have been for most of my career.
It didn’t matter if I thought the system or policy was stupid or even the person or group that created the policy was really at fault.
Behind closed doors, of course I would express my opinion. Did it make its way through the system to make a difference? Sometimes. Years later. Maybe.
But the one thing that was for sure was the frontline employee was getting held accountable if not the same day by the end of the week.
So all of this brings me here to the question we have today.
Should you go 100% in on your passion? And May I add design the life you want to live.
Now that you kind of know me and you can feel the passion and the energy I have around my experiences with this topic and my desire to control what really matters to me.

Before we go all in on anything it helps to know what the hell it is we’re going all in on.
I mean we don’t blindly walk through a dark room and expect to find what we are looking for… right?
So if we are looking for passion we need to know what the hell passion is?
I found myself up. Late at night. Wrestling with the idea… What is Passion?
Passion is a strong barely controllable emotion. A state or burst of emotion. An intense desire or enthusiasm for something.
Finding myself increasingly frustrated I typed in “true meaning of passion.” A strong feeling or emotion.
What the fuck man. I just want to understand.
More frustrated and with the lack of actionable clarity I thought to myself… let’s go on more layer deeper. (Root word of Passion).
So it turns out the word ‘passion’ is one of those words that we use differently today than the way people in the past originally used it. The word itself comes from the Latin root word, patior,
So patior means to suffer.
Umm to suffer?!
After researching all these definitions here is what I came up with.
