Hooter’s flirts with the subtleties of being naughty but not too naughty, a type of art that sometimes gets it into trouble. The history of Hooters is filled with battles both internally and externally even with giants such as the government. Through it all it continued to experiment with several unique business ventures such as a casino hotel, airline, magazine and even a late night show. This is the insane story of how Hooters defeated all the odds to become a restaurant empire with 420 locations that spans 42 states and 29 countries.

Prologue

How does a restaurant go from one location in Clearwater, Fl to having it’s own airline, late night show, motel, casino hotel, magazine, 420 locations in 42 states and 29 countries in a span of 40 years with an initial investment of just $140,000 dollars? Well it certainly wouldn’t be rounding up 5 of your best friends to pitch in who didn’t have any restaurant experience and say to hell with it right? Well think again. This is the insane story of how Hooters defied the odds and managed to become an internationally recognizable brand.

How It All Started

Hooters was started by 6 friends Lynn Stewart, Gil DiGiannantonio, Ed Droste, Billy Ranieri, Ken Wimmer and Dennis Johnson. They were semi successful businessman who one day was playing parcheesi at “The Home for the Visually Offensive.” Desiring the finer things in life they came up with the half baked idea to open up a restaurant that they couldn’t get kicked out of and on April 1st, 1983 Hooters was officially formed. The date was an April Fools’ Day joke because even they believed that their restaurant would inevitably fail.

Everything was stacked against them. None of them had any experience running a restaurant evidenced by them attempting to sell alcohol before they received their liquor license and having to call up another friend to teach them how to light up the fryers.

They also built their first location on a site that had seen many many businesses fail. So much so that the Hooters six built a small “graveyard” at the front of the door for each that had come and gone before them.

But due to their savviness and marketing angle they attracted loyal customers and eventually Hugh Connerty’s attention.

You may know this man as Liver King the modern day sophisticated caveman raking in more than 100 million dollars per year. You may be quick to think he made his fortune on TikTok the platform where he first went viral and currently has 3.1 Million followers but trust me he didn’t. He’s only been active on social media for less than 2 years and his message is resonating with large amounts of men while also capturing the attention of the mainstream. To truly understand how Brian Johnson became the Liver King and learn what he is all about… we must go back to where it all began.

This production took me a while to complete therefore since the time of this video being release, a big fact has since come out. To some it was obvious to others not so much. What interested me more was his story and taking some of the good out of the message. I’ve personally incorporated some of his tenets into my personal life and feel better for it. Like anything in life take the good from people and apply it.

The good part of Liver King’s message is about helping people, mostly men tackle issues that are so prevalent today such as stats that he shared:

Being primal is about living your truist, freest and healthiest life. It’s about earning the freedom to live life on your terms and find a cause worth working for. Do we all have a right to be mad that he lied and deceived people? You bet. He probably should give a massive donation to a couple charities or something but the sad reality is… this is life. Our politicians, bankers, athletes all lie for gain but one should strive to be better anyways because thats how you can look yourself in the mirror and be okay with yourself. Ownership, fulfillment, freedom and happiness are pillars to building a successful life that anyone can be proud of. It’s imperative now more than ever to commit to making progress on all of these pillars because each one cannot truly flourish without the other. You may be content with your current job but because you do not own that job it can be taken away from you. You can have a business but if you aren’t fulfilled and doing meaningful work the grind will become overbearing and lead to loss of happiness or worse depression. The quicker you see that these pillars are interconnected, the quicker you can make more meaningful moves to build a life where you wake up excited and energetic. Making progress on these 4 pillars gives me natural energy so there is no need to intake an artificial stimulant just to function. Making progress on these pillars over many years has given me the freedom of more time to do what I find valuable.

The economic conditions that are being forecasted ahead along with more and more industries potentially being disrupted from things such as technological advances and competition warrants your attention and makes these changes more urgent. Relying on a job to put food on the table puts you and the people that rely on you at great risk. I want you to accept that level of accountability and responsibility. Taking the time to understand how to deal with insecurities and turning them into strengthens is a big reason why I have been able to build genuine confidence. Confidence can be gained by repetition which leads to familiarity which gives you confidence that you can do that thing again because you have done it before. The problem with that logic is that it’s surface level confidence. Real genuine confidence is being able to muster up the courage to do something that you have never done before. Stacking past experiences and skills with current habits opens the door to bravery, courage & resourcefulness which are the ingredients to genuine confidence that everyone around you will immediately be able to notice.

In this video, I start out by sharing a personal experience of mine when I was in 5th grade where my teacher made me do the chicken dance! Breaking down this experience as well as other ones that you may have experienced yourself will give you the perspective and methods necessary to build the confidence that you desire. Dealing with insecurity isn’t easy and this video isn’t meant to replace a discussion with a licensed therapist but with that said, from my experience the longer you wait to address the root cause of where your insecurities came from the more diligent and more relentless you need to be to make change happen. Staying determined to do things that scare you, while increasing your knowledge will lead to the best version of you. Thats the version that you can truly be proud of and the one deserving of a life where you make the rules.

Intro

Who said the first 100k is a b*tch? That man is Charlie Munger. Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway with a current net worth of 2.2 billion. He’s been Warren Buffet’s right hand man since 1978 and in the 90s at a shareholder meeting a young man approached Charlie and started complaining about how hard it is to start building wealth and was frustrated at how slow the process was for him. Charlie told the young man, “well listen here”; okay, he didn’t actually say it like that but what he did say was,

“The first $100,000 is a b*tch, but you gotta do it. I don’t care what you have to do—if it means walking everywhere and not eating anything that wasn’t purchased with a coupon, find a way to get your hands on $100,000.00. After that you can ease off on the gas a little bit.”

This quote quickly became famous around the finance industry and is the bedrock of our conversation today.

Clarity

The first step to achieving your first 100k is to be really clear about why accumulating wealth is important to you. Without this level of clarity it will remain a wish and a dream. Hitting the 100k milestone needs to become the priority over things that take money away from you. If you’re stressing about paying bills, dread looking at the balance in your bank account, instantly regret the vacation you just took after paying the credit card bill and feel like you are behind in life then it’s time to stop playing games. Our economy and the money we use in it is a game that you play whether you are playing to win or not.

Understanding Where Your Money Flows To

The way you acknowledge the importance of this goal is by understanding where your money is flowing to. The money flows to things you are attached to. Things that you value even if you never looked at it that way.

For example it may sound weird to say you value something like sushi. But if sushi is the thing that is taking money out of your pocket and you are struggling to save the amount of money you need to hit your goal then it’s got to go. That’s how petty you have to be about all your little expenses. That’s what makes this process so hard.

When it comes to more necessary expenses like having a roof over your head and you live in a downtown high rise apartment with a view yet you don’t have 100k in the bank plus money invested all your doing is handing over your money to big companies and the rich people that own them all while guaranteeing you remain a wage slave forever. No amount of compliments or the feeling the view gives you is worth the time it took for you to make that money.

If you sit back and think about it… most people have so many hands reaching into their pockets taking money away from them while only have one source of income to fund it all. How silly is that?
